Irving, TX, Dec 16, 2015 – PET scanning has advanced medical diagnostics by lightyears since its arrival on the scene, but this imaging technology does come at a small price. Patients, and most especially medical staff members who work with this technology regularly, are exposed to minute doses of radiation. Lowering this exposure to make these already safe and vital tests even safer is the aim of a new procedure being developed.

To test the feasibility of this new procedure, researchers at Central Manchester University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust conducted a study. The study was aimed at determining if relatively recent advances in PET imaging technology could now allow a reduced amount of radioactive tracer to be used in tumor-testing procedures. So far, the results have shown that reducing the amount of radioactive tracer injected into patients prior to scans using advanced PET machines does not impact the quality of the results. It does, however, lower the overall radiation exposure for patients and staff members. Researchers also found that shorter scan periods were feasible, producing excellent results while lowering exposure even more.

This is especially important for those who find they require repeat procedures, as is often the case for cancer patients. It is also promising for medical professionals who find themselves encountering small exposure levels on a daily basis as a result of their professions.”

It is very helpful in diagnosing or ruling out a number of conditions and can also help in assessing cancer tumors. Patients who are asked to undergo PET scanning will find this procedure is relatively fast and provides medical professionals with vital information without calling for highly invasive alternatives.
