Determining the Prostate Cancer Risk Group

The physicians at the Prostate Seed Institute explain how the prostate cancer risk group is determined.

Irving, Texas - After diagnosing prostate cancer, doctors require additional information other than confirmation to establish how best to carry on with treatment options. A Prostate cancer risk group is common way that doctors use to determine how aggressive prostate cancer is. A risk group helps to indicate the possibility of the cancer spreading, and how fast it could happen.

“After completing a cancer diagnosis, the risk groups come in handy,” explain the physicians. “These groups help doctors to establish the treatment type that would best suit a patient’s case.”

Three main factors can help to determine the Prostate Cancer Risk Group of a patient:

• The results of a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test – The simple blood test can provide useful information about the prostate’s health. When there’s prostate cancer, cells in the gland produce more of this antigen, making it easy to measure it in blood samples. Doctors can also screen for prostate cancer using the PSA test.

• Prostate Cancer Stage – Staging of prostate cancer requires an analysis of one or more tests. The stage shows how prostate cancer has progressed within the gland and any other possible spread. For the prostate cancer to be in its early stage, it should be localized or be within the gland. If it spreads past the prostate capsule to other neighboring organs or distant parts of the body, then it is at an advanced stage.

• The Gleason Score – The physician obtains this score after carrying out a biopsy of a person’s prostate tissues. A pathologist views the samples under a microscope to examine the cells inside. A higher Gleason Score indicates a greater risk the cancer can possibly pose.

“The earlier you go for diagnosis, the easier it is to treat prostate cancer,” say the physicians. “Once the stage of the cancer is known, it makes it easier for doctors to recommend suitable treatment.”
