Making the most of the split seconds before a fire gets out of hand

Every year the UK witness thousands of properties suffering destruction from fires which got out of control before anyone could contain it. It is the kind of destructive force which claims around 200 lives annually in Britain alone. Although these facts appear to be rather dismal and depressing, it simply once again highlights the importance of fire training.

“Having the training needed to act swiftly and effectively in such an emergency by knowing exactly what to do and how to extinguish the fire effectively can mean the difference between life and death, it can be the difference between minor damage and complete devastation,” says Paul Mayfair, manager to S K Fire Protection, one of the leading providers of fire prevention equipment and training in London as well as the larger surrounds.

There are several benefits when you opt to complete comprehensive fire training, he further points out. “During our training sessions, we teach our students what to look out for to be able to identify the risks in any location. Every premises in the country must have at least one person responsible to take note of the dangers on site, to report it and to make the necessary changes needed to reduce the risk of fires,” Mayfair continues.
He furthermore expanded on how the best way to treat a fire is to take the necessary actions to prevent it from happening at all. During their training, they provide the necessary skills to take the needed preventative action but also to act effectively at that moment when a fire breaks out.

While it is important to have at least some individuals on-site who knows what to look out for to reduce your risk by minimising the hazards on your premises, it is vital that all the staff members need to know at least what to do when a fire breaks out. “We can’t emphasise the importance of fire drills enough. It is vital that all staff present will know how to evacuate your building swiftly without causing any chaos and it is this semi-automatic behaviour which gets instilled through regular fire drills. Although many employees simply hate fire drills, these are necessary to ensure when a crisis occurs, they will be able to do what they need to without going into a state of panic. Panic and chaos can drastically increase the risk and negative impact of these kinds of situations,” Mayfair concludes.
