How Fires Spread And Why It Happens So Quickly

Fire prevention experts highlight the importance of fire alarms for early detection of fires

For any fire to occur you need three things. The first one is heat which will cause the fire to ignite, another is oxygen to give the fire energy and the third is the fuel feeding the fire. Once there is enough heat to cause ignition and the other two ingredients are present as well, you are facing a fire hazard.

Once the fire started, the flames will always move away from the point with the most heat into a direction where it is cooler. This is one of the ways how a fire spreads throughout an entire building. The flames are always jumping away from the heat, expanding the area which is on fire. As this process can happen relatively quickly, it is vital to detect the fire as fast as possible before the area on fire becomes too large to contain.

“It is here where fire alarms are of vital importance. These alarms use several different techniques to measure the presence of a fire. A difference in the atmospheric levels of carbon monoxide, minor traces of smoke and even a minimal increase in the heat of its surroundings will all register on the sensitive sensors of these devices. These indicate to the alarm system that there is a fire and it will sound the necessary sirens and lights to attract the necessary attention to the situation,” says Paul Mayfair, the manager to one of London’s leading providers of fire prevention equipment, S K Fire Protection.

He then further expands on how sensitive these devices are and that they need to have regular services and maintenance to ensure that they are always in an optimal condition. “According to The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, most premises are expected to have proper fire alarm systems installed to give all occupants a fair chance to escape in the case of a fire. While it is important to have an alarm installed, it is as vital to ensure that your alarm is in a proper working condition. The only way to know this for sure is if you have a qualified team coming around every six months to service your system,” Mayfair further states.

While the legislation does not force all commercial property owners to have these systems in place, it does bring around several benefits if you do. The confidence of knowing your property and patrons are safe is invaluable, while the reduction on your monthly insurance premiums also makes it much more enticing.
