To Extract Or Not To Extract?

Dental experts give some insight into why dental extractions might sometime be the only viable solution.

One of the golden rules of dentistry is to always try to save a tooth if possible. Yet, sometimes the damage to a tooth is simply so bad that there is nothing that even the most experienced dentist can do to save the tooth. It might be a case that the tooth simply broke in such a bad way or that the decay is too advanced and no filling or crown or any other advanced treatment will save it. In some cases, it can also happen that the tooth is loose and bone grafts aren’t helping to get it fixed back in its place.

“Another reason for an extraction is overcrowding. This situation becomes a concern when there are too many teeth and they are pushing each other out of line, causing serious misalignment which can result in various other concerns,” says Dr Sunny Sihra, director to the prestigious dental clinic, Simply Teeth Essex.
“The process of extraction requires the removal of the entire tooth from its socket in the bone of the jaw,” Dr Sihra further explains. The procedure is invasive, but it often brings an immediate relief of the pain the patient suffers due to the damage to the tooth. Once the wound has healed, you can speak to their dental experts about the many alternatives to replace the gap in your teeth.

“Often the main concern of patients is that they don’t want to lose a tooth due to the aesthetic impact of a scarred smile. Smiling with a gaping hole between your teeth can make you feel self-conscious. It is why we always comfort our clients with the fact that our specialised services include many options to fill the gap once your wound has healed. We have bridges and implants to name only two solutions,” Dr Sihra explains.

Dr Sihra then also further gives advice on proper aftercare when you’ve had an extraction. Take care that the wound doesn’t get infected. It is why you shouldn’t smoke or drink from a straw for up to three days after the procedure. Stick to soft foods and liquids but the most important is to keep your gauze in for two hours after your procedure. The better you take care of the wound the faster the healing would take place and once the wound is completely healed, you can discuss your options for the future to get the gap in your smile bright and shiny again.
