THE DOS AND DON'TS OF OPERATING A FORKLIFT

Posted September 19, 2019 by cnforklift

Maintaining a forklift isn't a simple task and can get cumbersome. The operator must be trained in various aspects for forklift safety like pre-operational planning, safety and vehicle preparation.

To ensure operator safety, a forklift certification in Toronto is necessary. Here are some Dos and Don'ts of forklift safety:

Pre-operational Planning
As forklift has many moving parts, it has high chances of malfunctioning. Thus, it is essential to inspect forklift beforehand. Use a manufacturer provided checklist and if that is missing, avoid using the forklift till you have been provided with a replacement checklist. The forklift should not carry over the maximum lift capacity.

Preparing the Vehicle
Once the forklift pre-operational is complete, the operator must now make the final preparation.
If the forklift are used indoors, make sure that the area is ventilated. The internal combustion engine releases fumes that can create safety hazards.

Dos
It is imperative to carry loads as low as possible to ensure forklift safety. The low load ensures that the center of gravity is low to decrease the risk of forklift flipping over. Try to have enough clearance for the lift and the load when moving between or under any structure. Also, trying to avoid any kind of risks.
Another thing to keep in mind is to maintain a reasonable speed. The speed shouldn't exceed 3.5 Km per hour indoor and 24 km per hour outdoor. Always slow down when turning or using a ramp. Make sure to not overload the forklift as it will impair your visibility.

Don'ts
For forklift safety, it is important to never sacrifice safety for speed. Sometimes forklift operators ignore safety guidelines in order to finish their job quickly. However, if the guidelines are ignored, something can go wrong and thus the job can take more time and can even lead to injuries. Also, it is advised to never operate the forklift with a "side passengers" as it may create many safety hazards. Another 'don't' to keep in mind is that not to keep the forklift unattended with an elevated load. If you are distracted for even a second or walk away from an elevated load it can cause an accident or a serious injury. Do not make a turn when you on a ramp. If you turn a forklift in a ramp it can lose balance and flip. Never sit on the load as you can fall off or overload the forklift.
