Most shoulder problems are localized, less commonly they may be a part of a general condition; eg – Rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis of the shoulder is likely to occur following previous injuries. Problems in the neck or neck pain may also cause referred pain to the shoulder.

Shoulder disorders can be broadly classified into 3 categories:

1. Pain
2. Stiffness
3. Instability

Localized shoulder pain may be due to:

• Inflammation /damage to muscles and/or tendons around the shoulder.
• Inflammation of bursa (fluid filled lubricating sac)
• Damage to bones/cartilage

Common shoulder conditions:

Frozen shoulder
Painful arc syndrome
Rotator cuff disease
Impingement syndrome
Tendinitis
Shoulder dislocation
Traumatic tears /muscle paralysis.
