The Sultanate of Oman has shown significance progress over the last few years to ensure it is tackling the issue of waste management head on. At the International Conference for Waste Management in Muscat in 2013, the conference concluded with recommendations that should be looked into and implemented to help achieve the aim of a waste free culture. The recommendations included regulating waste with the task of legislating, regulating, supervising and accountability. Another recommendation made was to involve the Omani community to carry out social studies for environmental awareness.

We have in the last couple months seen that the nation is doing its due diligence in this regards. In a report by Muscat Daily in December, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs had issued orders suspending operations of companies who had not complied with environmental guidelines laid by the ministry. Last month also saw a recycled art symposium organised by the Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (OESHCO) to showcase the development in the waste management sector. Organized by Fleming Gulf, the 3rd International Conference for Waste Management Oman will reset the platform for industry and government institutions to discuss the next phase to managing waste.

Scheduled for the 7 to 8 April at the Al Bustan Palace in Muscat Oman, the conference is supported by key solution leaders in the field of waste management. Featuring a case-study from Finland, Martti Malmivirta will present on integrating technologies and services of different waste streams to maximize materials and energy yields. Malmivirta is the Co-Founder of the Finnish Material Efficiency Alliance (FMEA) and a Gold Sponsor at the event. The session will see what is lacking in terms of dealing with hazardous waste and look into the aspects of identifying, transport, treatment, storage facilities and the legislation on trans-boundary movement of hazardous waste.
