Etwa 70 Prozent der ausrangierten Laptop-Akkus eigneten sich noch für Urjar. Um sie in einen Urjar zu verbauen, werden die gebrauchten Akkupacks geöffnet. Dann werden die einzelnen Zellen überprüft; die noch brauchbaren werden zu neuen Akkupacks zusammengestellt.Urjars sind gedacht für Regionen, in denen nicht regelmäßig und dauerhaft Strom zur Verfügung steht. Der Akku wird aufgeladen, wenn Strom verfügbar ist. Bei Dunkelheit kann er dann dazu genutzt werden, die LED-Leuchte zu versorgen.Ein Urjar soll 600 Rupien, umgerechnet knapp 8 Euro kosten. Es soll günstiger sein als etwa eine LED-Lampe mit Solarmodulen und Akku. "Die teuerste Komponente dieser Systeme ist oft der Akku", sagte Projektleiter Vikas Chandan dem US-Wissenschaftsmagazin Technology Review. Bei einem Urjar komme diese vom Schrott. Die Wiederverwertung soll zudem das Problem des Elektronikschrotts etwas abmildern.

Gleichzeitig haben in Indien etwa 400 Millionen Menschen keinen Zugang zum Stromnetz. Faul in der Sonne liegen, im Meer abtauchen und sich am Strand aalen – das ist für viele der Inbegriff von Sommerurlaub. Für Smartphone, Tablet und E-Book-Reader ist das die reinste Tortur. Es gilt einiges zu beachten, damit die Geräte nicht den Geist aufgeben.

Kunden, die damals den Akku tauschen ließen seien von diesem Rückruf nicht betroffen. Betroffene Akkus wird HP kostenlos gegen neuwertige Akkus tauschen, egal wie alt die betroffenen Akkus sind. Kunden können sich telefonisch oder im Internet bei HP melden.Die Aufregung war gross, als vor einigen Monaten Laptops und Tablets auch auf Flügen von Europa in die USA aus dem Handgepäck verbannt werden sollten. Nun hat sich die US-Luftfahrtbehörde FAA dafür ausgesprochen, das Mitnehmen von grösseren elektronischen Geräten auch in aufgegebenem Gepäck zu verbieten.
