Craig McConnon Reflects on Smash Hit Year

Craig McConnon Group reports record year of growth on UK DJ scene

The Craig McConnon Group can be justifiably proud of their achievements this year, headlining massive growth across all aspects of the business. “It’s the end of the year already and honestly we don’t know where it went,” says Craig McConnon. “Looking back, we smashed it out the park. It’s been epic and I’m super proud of the team, and yeah, myself too. What we achieved is beyond belief and I can only see it getting bigger from here.”
Craig McConnon certainly deserves a pat on the back for venues launched this year. “We didn’t just launch venues, we made magic happen,” says a spokesman for the Craig McConnon Group. Major venues launched this year alone included Gen:Z in Northampton, Re:Doubt in Peterborough and Club Glacier in Luton. Undoubtedly, Craig’s favourite has been Club Glacier, which has drawn capacity crowds since its launch six weeks ago.
The Craig McConnon Group put it all on the line with the development of the technically complex venue inspired by Craig McConnon’s trip to Secret Solstice 2018. “We pulled it off,” says Craig McConnon. “Every time I walk in there, I’m like, wow, we actually did it. It’s alive.” Club Glacier certainly offers something magical as a careful recreation of what it’s really like to party inside a glacier. The club delivers on the promise thrilling and unique ambience with its translucent walls and low channel lighting, not to mention the channels and chambers that morph and sync with spectacular sound and light shows. “It’s my favourite place to be right now,” says Craig McConnon. “It’s like being a kid again. I just play and the place swells into a real-life fantasy.”
Craig McConnon’s preference for Club Glacier right now is no diss on Gen:Z and Re:Doubt, both drawing capacity crowds for booked and open events. “I feel we really added value to Northampton with Gen:Z, not only in creating a super awesome venue, but that we could give back to the music scene with our focus on Garage and Grime,” says Craig McConnon. “It’s a place where we can get really experimental with genres, dig deep, mix it up and showcase Britain’s best lesser known artists.”
The Craig McConnon Group has seen sonic level success with Re:Doubt, enlivening the music scene in the Fens. “There wasn’t much going on down there and we really felt that the young people needed a place to shuffle and that’s where we started,” says Craig McConnon. “When we saw that old barn the cogs and sparks got going and what we have now is a state-of-the-art DJ playground thats high on health and safety and still packs some busting moves.” Peterborough is set to hit the map as one of the UK’s most party-friendly destinations, and there’s little doubt Re:Doubt has been a big part of that. “We’re booked out every week and there are requests for 2019 coming in all the time,” says Craig McConnon. “What can I say? I’m pretty stoked it worked out like it did.”
But Craig McConnon doesn’t put any of the new venues out as his highlight of 2018. For that, the honours go to launching the Craig Cares Foundation and the work that’s been happening behind the scenes with the at-risk teens Craig and his team have taken under their wing. “I wanted to use music to show the kids that though our lives our different, much of our internal experience is the same,” he says. “We all laugh, we all cry, and we all have the capacity to change ourselves and the world. The first event changed me as a person. I’ve been a DJ all my life, but in that moment, I realised the true power of sound.”
Craig McConnon is impressed by the progress the teens have made and the extraordinary experimental sounds coming out of the studio. “We taught them the basics, but really they get the credit. They pull out all they’ve got every week and the results are awesome. We wanted them to walk out feeling like heroes, and I hope that we’re pulling that off and giving back to sound what sound has given to us.”
The Craig McConnon Group took a well-deserved breather to consolidate and reflect on 2018’s achievements, but with December rolled in and the party season on amp, Craig McConnon and his expanded team of DJ’s are working overtime to meet the need. “It’s definitely party time,” says Craig McConnon. “We took our time out and now we’re putting it all in to make this party season pump like never before.”
