Water coolers are no longer an office appliance alone. They have quickly become an essential household item too. Water coolers are a great way to encourage your family to increase their daily intake of water and on a hot sultry day, a drink from the water cooler can be extremely satisfying and thirst-quenching.
Water coolers also work as purifiers and it is necessary to buy a good model as your entire family will be drinking the water from it. A sub-standard water cooler can cause water-borne diseases if its filtration system is not good. So, before you buy a water cooler for your home, here are a few tips to consider before making your purchase.
Counter-top water coolers
As the name clearly implies, countertop water coolers are meant to be kept on top of a counter or table in your home. They are the far less cheap variety although that is no bearing on the quality of the coolers. Buy a countertop cooler only after considering where you will place it at home. Don’t mount the water cooler too high as you will have to change the water in it regularly and it can get difficult if it isn’t well within reach.
Freestanding water coolers
Freestanding water coolers are generally more expensive than their countertop counterparts. As these types of coolers do not have a compressor fitted inside, they can cool water to a lower temperature. Be sure not to place the cooler on top of a mat or carpet as there are chances of spilling near any water cooler. A freestanding water cooler also needs an electrical outlet so make sure you are placing it near one.
Temperature of the water
There is no standard temperature for water stored in water coolers. Different models cool water to varying degrees and this mainly depends on the design of the cooler. The temperature of the water is also dependent on the compressor installed inside. Generally, coolers where the storage space for water is at the bottom do not cool water as efficiently as other types of models. Small water coolers are also ineffective in comparison to bigger and better models.
Faucet for hot water
Some water cooler models also have faucets for hot water. While this is a feature that you can do without if what you’re actually looking for is cold water, but it’s a great way of getting a quick cup of hot water for your tea, coffee or any other kind of hot beverage.
While some models do not have these faucets at all, if you do buy a water cooler with a hot water faucet, you can leave the button for it switched off so that you conserve energy and turn it on only when you need to.
Water reservoir made of stainless steel
Most people do not like the taste of water dispensed from a cooler. There is a simple solution to this. You can buy a water cooler that has a stainless steel water reservoir so that your water no longer tastes like plastic.
