A trip to Italy is an adventure that is filled with history, wine, and food. Many people will spend their vacation in Italy in one city, but there is a whole country waiting to be explored.

Here are the best things to see in Italy:

The Colosseum

This humongous amphitheater was built by the Roman Empire, and modern-day arenas have been modeled after this masterpiece. This piece of history is surrounded by more modern buildings and attractions, but the Colosseum is filled with so much history and charm that it is still one of the number tourist destinations in the country.

Pompeii

Visitors will find themselves transported back in time as they walk the streets of Pompeii. Mount Vesuvius erupted back in 79 A.D. and the ash and lava completely covered this Roman city. Since that time, the city has been excavated and people can now look at what remains of homes, markets, baths, theaters, and temples.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

If the Leaning Tower of Pisa had never begun to lean, it may not have become one of the most talked about landmarks in the world. The tower had only begun being built when one side began to sink into the ground. Back in the 1990s, a lot of restoration work was completed on the tower, so that it would not fall over in the future. That restoration is the reason that visitors can still climb to the top to see spectacular views of the city below.

Cinque Terre

Five villages make up the Cinque Terre and the best way to see and appreciate the landscape of the area is to hike to all of them. The five villages include Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare. Each village is unique, but they all offer a serene setting for people to enjoy.

Vatican City

Vatican City is its own little world and people can spend days in this area. Three of the must-see attractions include St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum, and the Sistine Chapel. While at the Sistine Chapel, people will want to spend some time looking at the art work of the infamous Michelangelo.

There are so many things to see in Italy that a carefully planned itinerary is necessary. This is something that people should plan before they begin their vacation in Italy.
