According to Steven Carroll, Westervelt Lodge Manager, “ Westervelt Lodge is a real hidden gem of the deep South. Our beautiful location on the banks of the Tombigbee River in West Alabama, creates the perfect setting for sporting history and traditions to be honoured. Our well-trained staff are attentive to the needs of guests and do their utmost to make the excursion an experience beyond compare. Our repeat business speaks for itself.”
Westervelt Lodge can be found on the banks of the Tombigbee River in West Alabama and is set on 12 000 acres of land, which makes it one of the largest hunting plantations in the Deep South. Nestled in old world charm, the accommodation, while being informal, is also very elegantly refined, and offers an abundance of well-renowned southern hospitality.
With original pine floors and oversized fireplaces, the main lodge oozes with character and can accommodate up to 26 guests. There are 10 ensuite rooms with king-size beds and daily housekeeping is available, while a smaller lodge sleeping four guests, which is perfect for smaller groups or business delegations, is available as well. Hearty meals in southern cooking style is provided every day, with the in-house chefs outdoing themselves.
The beauty of visiting Westervelt Lodge lies in the diverse activities available to guests. Hunters are spoilt for choice and they are able to hunt for deer, wild turkey and a variety of birds in wing shooting activity. The hunting plantation also has a vast network of endless trails. Fishing for the abundant bream, bass and crappie in the rivers, streams, lakes and ponds is a lovely relaxing pastime while on a breakaway at the lodge.
A private shooting range is at the disposal of paying guests of the lodge. Whether it is to fine-tune the scope of a hunting rifle or to pattern a turkey gun or to warm up before a hunt, the friendly staff will accompany guests to the range, which is situated in close proximity to the lodge.
The most popular wingshooting activity in America appears to be pheasant shooting, specifically the ring-neck pheasant, being the most prevalent. When hunting alongside guides, birds can easily be spotted by them in weedy patches, grass meadows, on the outer parameters of woodlands and in grainfields, the most popular landscape for pheasants. They thrive in a habitat which has an abundance of seeds, berries, fruits, insects crops and wild plants.
To include dogs in the hunting party is a personal preference. Pheasant shooting with dogs requires special skills and at Westervelt, trained dogs are availalble to assist with the hunt. The hunters own vaccinated dog is allowed and outstanding accommodation is provided for them, but it is preferred to hunt with trained resident bird dogs.
Doves are part of the pigeon family and are prevalent in Alabama. Recognized by a small head, stout body, short neck and legs and grey in colour, they are shot while flying from the roost or nest. This rapid in-flight speed is challenging for the hunter. Dove hunting takes place in meadows, fields, wooded forests and in the rough terrains of low mountains. When it comes to dove hunting in Alabama, Westervelt Lodge offers a first rate experience.
Quail hunting takes place during the hunting season which runs from October to March. Shooting in various styles, including a mule drawn wagon, horseback, quail buggies and walkabouts. For an experience beyond compare, quail hunting at Westervelt is just that, the location being the most perfect in the Deep South. With the help of welltrained guides, southern hospitality, gourmet eating experiences and 5star lodging, hunting at Westervelt becomes an event to remember, offering something for everyone and exceeding all expectations, making it well worth the visit.
