Prenuptial Agreements Becoming Popular in the US

More Americans are opting for prenuptial agreements before getting married. These agreements protect their wealth and from their partner's debt.

Recent data revealed that half of U.S. adults are willing to sign a prenup, challenging traditional views on romance and marriage. This trend is especially prominent among millennials, who aim to safeguard their assets before getting married, expanding the reach of prenups beyond the wealthy and famous. (London, 23/10/2023)
Support Prenuptial Agreement

A recent survey showed that around 50 percent of American adults support using prenuptial agreements, although only one in five married couples have one. The percentage of adults supporting prenups has increased from 42 percent in the previous year. Additionally, 66 percent of respondents on The League dating app are open to signing a prenup.
Younger Generation
The Harris Poll showed that younger generations are increasingly embracing prenups. Among engaged or previously married Gen Z respondents, 41 percent reported having a prenup, while 47 percent of engaged or previously married millennials said the same.

High Divorce Rates
Americans marry later in life, with individual assets and debt to weigh before tying the knot. Divorce rates remain high despite a recent decrease due to a wedding boom. Nationally, 40 percent of marriages ultimately end in divorce.

Financial Protection
Prenups were traditionally seen as advantageous for wealthier grooms and are now embraced by women as a means of financial protection. The Future Wallet CEO and founder Beth Williams urges early discussions to destigmatize and normalize this important aspect of relationships.
Increase in Prenups
HelloPrenup, an online platform launched by two millennial women in 2021, aims to simplify the complicated process of penning prenups. The platform projects a significant increase in prenups in 2023 compared to 2021.

Protection from Partner's Debt
The platform also shared that most of its users, or 65 percent, seek protection against their partner's debt. Additionally, a significant number of users, or 87 percent, are utilizing prenuptial agreements to define the separation between individual and shared properties.

Today, prenuptial agreements are more accepted and considered a part of the wedding planning process. The perception of prenups has shifted from being associated with fears of divorce to being recognized as a practical measure.
