At some point in time, MMO population goes down. A number of factors affect it, such as players having real-life issues to deal with to the cost of maintaining a character, or sometimes, even a number of characters. Then, there is of course simply player fatigue, when the game has become boring and repetitive that it no longer holds any allure.

Any MMO will experience such things, and most see it as something that is normal. A large drop in population, though, would be cause for concern for any publisher and developer, as games make their revenue through the players in one way or the other.

Recently, it has been noted that subscription to “World of Warcraft” has gone down drastically. As it now stands, subscriptions have gone all the way down to 5.6 million. Although this number is still impressive by any means, given that many MMOs would gladly want to have even just half of this number, in the case of World of Warcraft, this might cause for some alarm.

When the expansion “Warlords of Draenor” came last year, subscription for the game rose to 10 million, its second highest ever. By some accounts, World of Warcraft has hit a peak of around 12 million subscriptions. Now, the numbers show a drastic drop to half of that 10 million.

A new expansion is in the offing, however, and perhaps it is what the game needs. Mike Morhaime, one of Blizzard’s founders, is optimistic about the coming expansion for the game.

“We’re going to have exciting news at Gamescom this week,” he said. “We’ll be announcing the next expansion for ‘World of Warcraft.’ We’ve been listening closely to our players about their experience with ‘Warlords of Draenor,’ and we think they’ll be really excited when they hear our plans.”

Morhaime has, so far, side-stepped the issue regarding the drop in subscriptions, and would rather focus on what is to come for World of Warcraft, which might be a good strategy and just might get people back into the game.
