Florida – November, 2019 – In a truck crash, it is not rare for one or more of the tires to have been scuffed, sliced, or burst. The tremendous forces generated in a crash can easily damage a vehicle’s tires. However, some accidents are the result of a failed tire. Here is a look at the signs that tire damage may have caused or resulted in a truck crash.

The forensic study of a tire failure involves gathering sufficient visual data to understand the tires’ condition before failure and recovering clues to its failure. Any history, such as sales receipts or repair orders, is also considered.

Tires may all look similar but there are distinct differences between tires of Passenger, Light and Heavy Trucks. These differences range from construction and application to strength, durability and handling, depending upon the type of vehicle.

Tire Identification
Different tires may also share some common characteristics. Every tire has a DOT number. This is molded into both sidewalls near the bead. This is a unique number that includes information about the tire manufacturing plant, tire code, and week and year of manufacture.

The tire size can be compared with the vehicle’s tire information to check whether the correct size and type of tire is installed. The sidewall markings on the tire may also contain information like the load factor, load range and speed ratings, wherever applicable.

Tire Condition
One of the most important factors is ascertaining the inflation condition of the tire. If the tire was running flat, sidewalls will receive uniform damage. Any abrasions, punctures or cuts in the sidewall may also act as clues to the tire condition before or resulting from the crash. Any strange scrubbing laterally across the center of the tread may be a sign that an inflated tire underwent a spin or lateral skid. Signs like irregular tread and shoulder wear also reveal important information.

Expert Investigation
Some tire components may be lost in a crash. In such cases, the remaining tires on the vehicle may provide important clues.

Hiring a forensic expert, who is skilled in tire evaluations, can provide a valuable glimpse into your specific case. A tire inspection can prove or disprove liability.

Tire Investigation Checklist
If you suspect a failed or damaged tire, check the following aspects.
• DOT Code
• Tire Manufacturer
• Tire Brand
• Tire Size / Load Range
• Vehicle (Year / Make / Model)
• Installed Location of Subject Tire(s): (LF, RF, LR, RR)
• Vehicle Service History
• Tire Replacement Date and Mileage
• Last Vehicle Service
• Current Vehicle Mileage
• Location of Vehicle / Subject Tire
