Tips in Saving Water-Damaged Pictures

Posted June 20, 2022 by totalrestorationca

It’s devastating when your home is damaged by a flood. Things like furniture can be replaced but there are also others that will not be as easy to replace. Pictures, especially the old ones, are hard to replicate.

If you have photos submerged in a flood, here are the things that you should do:
1. Act quickly
Start separating the photos while they are still wet. Once they dry up, they can stick together and that will cause even more damage. So as soon as it is safe to go back to your home, check your photos and start separating them. Make sure you handle the photos carefully as they can rip easily while wet.
2. Clean and dry them up with the print side facing up
Use a paper towel to remove as much water as you can from the photos. Line them up on a flat surface and put the photos with the print side up. Replace the paper towel as often as needed.
Don’t blast off the surface with air, especially from a blow dryer. Just allow the wind and air circulating in the room to dry up the photos naturally.
3. Let them air-dry indoors
Don’t put them outside to dry under the sun because the heat can cause the edges to curl up. It’s better to air dry them so that they will retain their shape.
