If we’ve ever had to replace our old flooring, then we know that the most important part is the laying of the support for the flooring. Whether we’re interested in laying down hardwood, marble, natural stone, floating wood or ceramic flooring, applying cork underlayment can make the difference between a warm and sound insulating floor that’s resistant to moisture and durable, and a cold and otherwise lower quality floor.

When it comes to choosing the underlayment of the flooring in our home we first have to think about what kind of flooring we’re going to have. What we’re going to put on top of it is relevant, as well as the general wear and tear that we expect it to be exposed to. Some say that for ceramic flooring the best option is to have the tiles laid down in a thick slab of mortar that is poured at the same time. While this is indeed the best way to do it, the downside is that this kind of underlayment can only be used for tiles made of stone or ceramic and can only be done by professionals which have some experience in doing this. It’s not something that we will want to try ourselves as just making the mortar can be a job that’s a bit too dirty and which requires us to use power tools. The other options we have are to lay the ceramic tiles over plywood, cement board or even cork. Indeed, while a bit counterintuitive to use cork, the fact is that cork underlayment can be quite solid as a base if installed properly.

The real issue that we would have with a wood based underlayment in general is that it cannot withstand high moisture as it can absorb it and become uneven, swollen. It is only natural in such a case that we would not want to use a wood based underlayment in areas like the kitchen, bathroom or basement. However, cork underlayment isn’t exactly our usual customer. It is well known that cork has water repelling properties due to the fact that it contains Suberin, a wax like substance which prevents water from getting through. Of course, the finished products can be further treated in order to make it even more reliable when it comes to its water repelling capacity so there should be no worry regarding its use as underlayment just about anywhere. However, we will need to check with the producer in order to obtain some kind of guarantee as to the quality of the product.

There are several other reasons for which we should choose cork as an underlayment for our flooring besides the fact that it is relatively easy to install and that it is waterproof. Cork underlayment will also act as a thermic barrier, keeping the floor unaffected by the temperature of whatever happens to be below the cork underlayment. Furthermore, cork will also act as a natural sound barrier keeping the noise within or, on the contrary, keeping the outside noise outside. Being a made from bark, cork is a eco-friendly alternative to most of the other types of underlayment that we can use.
