UK Public Urged to Take Measures to Protect Against UV Rays

The Met Office urges the public to protect themselves from harmful UV rays. Some tips on how to do so include using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and staying in the shade even during winter.

[UK, 25/10/2022] Summer may be over, but the UK's weather agency is urging the public to take care under the sun. The Met Office issued a health warning in July, encouraging people to stay indoors instead of directly enjoying the summer sun. Even though winter is on the way, the Met Office is still urging people to take care and stay protected from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Effects of UV ray exposure
Studies show that UV rays can cause skin cancer and eye damage and suppress the immune system. It is especially harmful to children, who are more likely to develop skin cancer later in life if they are not protected from the sun. Freckles, moles, and wrinkles are all signs of sun damage, but other symptoms are not always visible, so it is vital to take care of the skin no matter the season.

UV ray damage preventive measures

Apply sunscreen
The best way to protect against UV rays is to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. But higher SPF doesn't mean people can stay out longer in the sun. People should reapply every two hours, even if it's cloudy, and after getting wet from sweating or swimming, to ensure the skin is protected.

Wear protective clothing
Wearing clothing that covers the skin is another way to protect against UV rays. Long-sleeved shirts and pants, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses can help shield the skin from the sun. Many companies now make UV-protective clothing that has an SPF rating.

Seek shade
Whenever possible, people should try to stay in the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is at its peak. While most people would like to spend time outdoors, it's important to find ways to enjoy the outdoors without being in direct sunlight. Skylights and sunrooms are a great way to let in natural light without being directly exposed to harmful UV rays. These can also be treated with protective films that help filter out harmful UV radiation.
