Pondicherry is about 150 kms from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. Pondicherry was ruled by the French till about 1954. Aurobindo Ashram and the Auroville township are two of the prominent French legacies in Pondicherry.

Auroville in Pondicherry

The Auroville township is about 8 kms from Pondicherry. This township is the brainchild of the Mother’, who was the spiritual guru of the Aurobindo Ashram. It was established in 1968. It was conceived as an experiment to encourage people of all nationalities to live and practice sustainable livelihood methods .

There are several manufacturing units run by citizens from diverse nationalities in Auroville .There is textile manufacturing, pottery making , candle making, furniture manufacturing, soap & potpourri units among others.

Shopping in Auroville

Auroville has 3 ,4 shops in its premises. Kalki, La Boutique Auroville and Mira boutique in Auroville. The products manufactured in Auroville can be purchased in these shops. Shop for western wear garments such as stylish palazzo pants , tops made from bamboo fibre , scented candles ,stationery items, soaps, face ,body and hair care products, table mats, lamps and lamp shades and ceramic products.

The Tamil Quarters in Pondicherry
This area is in the old part of Pondicherry. It is congested and noisy .Casablanca, Hi Design, and Kalki are some of the prominent shops in the Tamil Quarters . Casablanca is in 3 floors and stocks cosmetics, apparel for men, women and children, and a great range of home furnishings. Tops , Western wear dresses and home furnishings in pure cotton are a great buy in this store.

Kalki stocks Auroville products such as candles, lamp shades, bags, footwear and garments. There are garments for children here as well.
Hi design is the premium leather manufacturer with stylish handbags, wallets, briefcases and jackets. Their bags are sold in departmental stores across the world.

The French Quarters in Pondicherry
Shopping in the French Quarters is an altogether different experience . Walking in rue du Bazar Saint Laurent, Rue de Dumas, Rue Romain Rolland Street, will transport you to a French village .The buildings have French architecture. There is hardly any vehicular traffic in the roads. It is a pleasure shopping in these streets although the weather could be a dampener. Shop for antique furniture, exquisitely embroidered furnishings, Kashmiri carpets, shawls, candles, food products, soap, ,children’s garments, footwear, bags , western wear dresses and costume jewellery. Janaki is large store that stocks products from Auroville.

The Promenade is a great place to hang around in the evenings.
