WEDDING GIFT REGISTRIES IN INDIA- AN INTRODUCTION

Posted September 24, 2016 by shaadiformy

The concept of wedding gift registries was started in the early 1920’s in one of Chicago’s most popular departmental stores- Marshall Field’s.

The reason behind it was simple- it allowed an engaged couple to choose gifts from a large variety of products and communicate their this preference to their guests.

What it did was; do away with the awkwardness that surrounded the question “What would you like for your wedding?” (Generally asked as a formality with the fear that the couple might want something outrageously expensive).

With a wedding gift registry, a couple could simply say that they were registered at a certain store or website and the guest could get them a gift within their budget that they knew the couple would love.

We’re sure that by now you can see why For My Shaadi was allured towards the this concept and encouraged to launch it in India!

Wait!

You don’t see it?

Do you?

It’s okay, like all new things we realize that it will take India a little time to warm up to this idea and see the utility in it.

In the meantime why don’t we address some commonly asked questions! It might help you warm up faster!

Q1. Isn’t making a registry the same as out rightly asking for something? Doesn’t that seem rude?
Our answer:
When you’re engaged, your close friends and relatives often ask you what you’d like to have. Either you tell them what you like (which you don’t because you feel shy or awkward) or you say, “nothing- your blessings are enough” (in which case you know that they won’t show up empty handed at your function and you face the danger of being saddled with something of their choice).
Both these alternatives seemed pretty sad to us; so we came up with a third; you tell your guests (who’ve asked you) that you’re registered with us and they get you a gift, that you’ve chosen, within their budget.
Moreover, no one feels shy in telling their friends what they like. It is only prudent to make your choices known. (You’ve been doing it for your birthday gifts, how is it any different from your wedding gifts?)
