Mithril dragons are a nostalgiac, hardy dragon that most of us probably remember trying to kill as a kid. They were introduced along with the Ancient Cavern as an upgrade from Steel Dragons from years past and came with a shiny new Dragon Fullhelm as a drop.

Unfortunately, they’ve never really been easy or profitable to kill due to how inaccurate even maxed players will hit against them. This short guide will be for those wanting to do them for slayer tasks or just to be a completionist in this game.

Gearing Up

Since this dragon has an extremely high base defense with the only stab being a slight weak point, the idea is to get the best stab & strength set up to get in some his. This should either use the Dragon Hunter Lance or a Zamorakian Hasta, with the former having a 20% accuracy bonus against any dragon.

The armor should be made up of Bandos armor with a fighter hat (for accuracy) and Primordial Boots. A Dragonfire shield is a must-have for offensive stats, defensive stats and how it can ward off the dragon’s powerful breath. An extended anti-fire potion should still be used in combination.

An amulet of torture should be used in the necklace slot, although a fury would be suitable as well (having a stab bonus). Barrows Gloves, an imbued Treasonous Ring and any god blessing would be other suitable accessories.

While an Inferno Cape would be good, any tier of Ardougne cloak would be better due to the stab accuracy and prayer bonus. Any skill cape would also do OK for the prayer bonus, but it would be less than efficient.

Your backpack should consist of Super Combat Potions, a few prayer potions and lots of high-healing food to endure the fight. Saradomin Brews or combo food isn’t really necessary as this isn’t the type of fight for damage to stack up against you like other bosses.

Getting There

The easiest way to get there is to use any teleport to Barbarian Assualt and walking south to the big pool in the river. Since there is a bank inside, using the same teleport back is just fine for a bank trip. If you have a pool in your house, that would be a better alternative to restore prayer and hitpoints.

Alternatively, you may teleport to clan wars to restore your stats, and then back to Barbarian Assault.

Go to the southeastern part of the cave past the brutal green dragons and make your way up to some subtly placed stairs. This will bring you to two Mithril Dragons, surrounded by some mithril rocks and stalagmites.

The Fight

Unlike later bosses, this dragon does not have any special attacks to avoid and no gear switching required. You simply have to tank and deal damage until the fight is over. Even with the best gear, you will notice a lot of zeroes against it, which is the main annoyance of it.

If you have a rather low melee defense, you can pray to protect from melee and take whatever magic hits are dealt with you. If you have a melee defense setup, you should instead pray against magic and tank the melee hits. In either case, you will dwindle in food supply anyway.

Rewards

Since it is an old enemy, the drop table may seem quite underwhelming aside from its rare drops. You should expect to get rune maces, rune battleaxes, runite bolts, and Dragon Bones as the main items to pick up.

You will occasionally get Chewed Bones that essentially serve as another roll on the drop table. It can also drop additional items like runite darts and various mixed potions. Of course, a 1/250 roll at a Dragon Full Helm is the main reason to keep these.

To cash in your Chewed Bones, you will have to create a Barbarian Pyre outside the dungeon. You put these bones on a Pyre ship with a tinderbox and logs to summon the spirit. Once he is laid to rest and you see the animation of his ghost, the item will appear in your inventory.
