BookAngel UK is pleased to announce the winners of the 2019 Stephen Award for Distinctive Cats.

The Stephen Memorial Award is run by the Bookangel.co.uk book club whose objective is to commemorate the furry feline founder member, Stephen, who passed away in October 2016. Spiraling out of a discussion on a book forum, the concept of this award was born which is to give recognition for books that features cats worthy of Stephen’s seal of approval. In partnership with CatChat.org, a charity that rehomes cats, Stephen Memorial Award is now in its third year. First launched in August 2017, this also served as a way to bring attention to other unique cats out there that are looking to find their own forever home.

The official results were first announced on October 1st with Steve Callahan as the final winner bagging the 2019 Stephen Award for Distinctive Cats for “Special” featuring Kitty Wampus who is a three- legged cat who finally made the effort to accept her disability and making friends along the way.

Callahan is an Occupational Therapist and worked with different patients for the past twenty plus years. As a father to two great kids including his daughter who suffered significant neurological damage at birth, this inspired him to tell this tale. One of the themes of “Special” is not to judge a book by its cover. Instead, it focuses on opening the book, looking inside it and understanding and realizing all the amazing and wonderful qualities we can discover if only we take the time to really look.

In no particular order, judges also chose three Runner Ups and among them were Stephanie Barr for the "Curse of the Jenri," whose story revolves around Strength, Spirit and their siblings, new born kitten familiars to an unwitting mage; Debbie Kupfer for her "Cecilia," a book about cat growing up on the street’s of Jerusalem; and Beatrice Fishback with her "Summer of the Missing Muse," featuring Pillow, a fluffy ball of pride that rules the roost.

For the 2019 Award, BookAngel UK again worked in partnership with CatChat.org, and donated £1 for each book entered. Bookangel are proud to reveal that the award was able to raise enough funds to rehome twenty cats. Although the competition is over, advocates and sponsors are still encouraged to support Catchat directly through their website. This seemed timely and relevant since Stephen was a rescue cat himself.
