Time Management and Leadership

Time is an essential component to consider in carefully coordinating the other three aspects of management in the nursing practice. Similarly, in leadership and management, time is crucial because it enables leaders and managers to plan their resources to achieve the set organizational objectives. Most importantly, every nurse must have clear-cut goals and priorities at the workplace to ensure the proper delivery of services. This paper provides the analysis of my time management incorporated in the concepts of leadership and management and suggests ways in which nurses can apply these notions at the workplace in an effective manner.
Integrated Curriculum for Achieving Necessary Skills (ICANS) recommended a time management tool that I used. The instrument has part one, which assesses how well an individual saves time, and part two that evaluates how an individual wastes time. Part one has 36 points, while part two has 20 points. After the analysis, time lost is subtracted from the time well spent. A score from 30 to 36 indicates excellent management of time. One who scores such high is free to offer time management tips to others. A score of 20 to 28 is relevant to most people. Anybody with such a score should learn from the individuals classified in the first score group. Lastly, a score of below 20 shows poor time management and one is required to improve their time management strategies. Furthermore, anybody who scores below 20 is not organized and is prone to making bad decisions. I took the time to analyze myself through all the questions. Firstly, I analyzed how well I spent time, and I scored 34 points. Secondly, I analyzed myself on how I wasted time and I scored 2. My overall score was 32, which indicated proper time management. Indeed, it is true because I have daily and weekly plans and I often do not go behind the schedule. Furthermore, I advise my peers on time management skills.
From the assessment, I learned that I could make a good leader. Similarly, I noticed that I could be a good manager based on the knowledge I acquired about management. In terms of leadership, I found out that there is a skill of influencing other people in achieving a particular goal. Through teaching my peers about managing time and completing their tasks, I discovered that I displayed excellent leadership skills. At the same time, in regard to management, I learned that resources are to be mobilized, combined and coordinated effectively to achieve the set objectives. I have the traits of a manager because I know how to manage the resource of time. However, I am not effective when it comes to mobilizing and coordinating issues. I am good at influencing other people through my punctuality which makes me believe I have the traits of leadership.
The trait theory of leadership states that an individual possesses a set of emotional and physical characteristics that are paramount to inspiring other people. In this theory, the central belief is that certain leaders are born with given qualities that determine their success and leadership ability. From analyzing this theory and my traits, I found out that the trait theory applies to me as I have the eagerness of meeting my deadlines and influencing my peers for productive work.
Earlier on, I used to think that management and leadership are the same. However, I learned that leadership and management are two different concepts. For example, managers have people working for them, while leaders have people following them. In other words, managers direct and mobilize, while leaders use interpersonal skills to influence other people. Similarly, a manager maintains the status quo in contrast to a leader who challenges the status quo and develops new strategies to handle issues. This difference makes the managers copies of the previous managers while leaders stay original. Additionally, a manager asks “how” and “when” questions as compared to a leader who asks “what” and “why” questions. In this way, managers want things done in a particular way in a set period, while leaders want to reason out issues and handle them later. In my view, I would want to be a good leader because it gives a chance for one to be themselves and mentor other people as opposed to managers who imitate and do not influence others.
In the working environment, leaders need to display traits that ensure a smooth working environment. A leader who influences other nurses to work well and compliments them has been shown to improve patient outcomes. Furthermore, a good leader must possess characteristics that other workmates can emulate, such as proper time management, setting goals, meeting deadlines, and self-discipline. Besides, before one is considered to be a leader at the workplace, they must be knowledgeable about all styles of leadership, that is, autocratic, democratic and permissive. Although the authoritarian style of leadership is often looked down upon, leaders must combine all the methods on their subjects to ensure they meet their objectives.
All nurses need to learn how to manage time. It is critical for nursing specialists to evaluate themselves on how well they use their time and design ways to minimizing time wastage. Moreover, leaders must strive to ensure they possess the characteristics that their subjects would like to follow. Additionally, although leadership and management are confused to be a single notion, they are two different concepts and nurse leaders should consider using all the leadership styles at their places to provide better patient outcomes.
