Michael Doven Discusses Future Technology To Be Used In Films

Michael Doven, successful producer and CEO of United Pictures Group, discusses the new technology that is being used by today's directors to film movies.

According to Michael Doven, CEO of United Pictures Group and a noted film producer, today's filming technology is a far cry from that of even ten years ago. "Not only have computers taken over in terms of digitizing content, but the filming mechanisms that we use are no longer solely large, bulky cameras but now include a vast array of smaller, portable devices which allow for remarkable images."

GoPro, Black Magic, Canon, Red, Arri Alexa, Drones and even iPhones can now be used to film movies, and because of this filmmakers are seeing remarkable images that were unattainable only several years ago. There are many of these examples on You Tube and vimeo.

Doven notes that virtual technology is also now very much on the rise. In a recent interview, Doven discussed a new VR technology, Oculus Rift, and its impact on filmmaking.

"Oculus Rift is truly forward-thinking virtual reality," says Doven. "The display technology allows users to experience the sensation of presence. This results in a feeling of immersion and I can’t wait to get my hands on one. And now we also have Google’s Unofficial Cardboard as seen at https://www.unofficialcardboard.com . This is remarkable as one can experience virtual reality using a simple iPhone placed in the inexpensive cardboard device and all of a sudden it is within reach of every person at $19 per unit. I recently tried one with my 11-year-old son and we were intrigued and eager to show it to all of his friends.”

Doven notes that this technology will inevitably merge with movie making and create hybrid experiences whereby the audience will be watching or experiencing the film but also have a certain amount of freedom of where to put their attention and where the story goes.

"Producers, movie makers, writers and directors are story tellers, and great entertainment contains great stories well told. It is up to us to find a way to incorporate the emerging technologies and enhance the telling of our stories using it," says Doven.
