Termites in your home can be a major problem, but not if you know how spot early signs of a termite infestation.

Many pest control specialists recommend getting your home inspected for termites at least once per year, but that doesn't mean you can't check for termite damage on your own. In fact, it is a good idea to do so every three months.

In order to search for termites, you will need some useful tools to help you discover termite damage, like a magnifying glass, a flashlight, a screwdriver, and a hammer.

You should begin by inspecting the exterior of your home. If you find signs of termites there, you will be able to figure out which areas inside the home you should focus your attention.

The two types of termites that are typically found in the United States are drywood termites and subterranean termites. Each species leaves different clues to indicate their presence. Before you begin your search, it is a good idea to research what type of termites are usually found in your area.

If subterranean termites are found in your area, you should focus your search on the foundation of your home. These termites often enter your home through the ground by constructing mud tubes that lead from the ground to your home's foundation.

If you find evidence of mud tubes, you will want to break them apart to see if there are any termites present. If there are , your next course of action is to see if any of the tubes leads to an access point where the termites could have entered your home. If you find no termites in the tunnels, but they appear to lead to an access point, it is possible that the termites have already entered your home.

Another sign of termite activity is termite swarmers. Termite swarmers are adult termites that have grown wings and leave the inside of your home in an effort to expand their territory. If you notice swarmers flying around the exterior of your home, you should call a termite inspector for further evaluation.

The amount of time the swarmers spend flying around outside your home is relatively small, so you may not physically see them; however, you can look for evidence that they have been there.

You can use your magnifying glass to look for their shredded wings around your home. If you find some insect wings, pick a few up and research what they may be or consult with a professional.

There are many ways you can search for termites on your own, but if you are unsure of your findings, it is best to consult with a professional.
