The Psychology of Coaching and The New Frontier for Coaches

Posted May 6, 2020 by positivepsychology1

In the workplace, positive psychology is telling us that positive relationships are fundamental to creating a culture of positive mental wellbeing.

The coaching of psychology is concerned with the psychological principles on which coaching is based. Though coaching incorporates many different disciplines, positive psychology is one of the most critical and most effective.

Applying Psychology to Coaching

The art and science of psychology is used in the coaching realm. Understanding that there is both an art and a science in coaching will make you a more effective coach - a coach who can find more outcomes in more situations and for more clients. Some of the tools that clinical psychologists and therapists have used for years are now applied in coaching, and becoming a part of the coach's toolbox.

The Art of Coaching Psychology

The psychology of coaching is often used creatively to help clients understand that decisions and choices are fundamental to happiness and success in life. It is about taking practical psychological methods and using them to help people improve their lives. It's about weaving different approaches into your coaching sessions and creatively applying them to different clients. This is an art that takes some time to develop and perfect, but the more artful you are, the more innovative your coaching becomes, and the more outcomes you can find for your clients.

Think of coaches as painters, with easels in front of them. But, instead of the coach taking the paint brush and painting a picture, they will help guide the client to paint their own picture.

The Science of Coaching Psychology

Using science in the psychology of coaching means you are taking approaches that have been scientifically proven to work. You are also working with outcomes that are measurable. Picture a scientist working in a lab. The scientist uses data and evidence to develop theories. Now picture a coach working with a client. The coach using theories that are evidence based and also is able to assess the effect various approaches, theories, and tools have on individual clients. The coach is the scientist working with data, measurements, and proven theories.

Think of coaches as scientists with mosaics of data in front of them. Think of them helping their clients to arrange that data into strategies and plans that encourage change, and can be measured and assessed.

The Psychology of Coaching and The New Frontier for Coaches

Psychology is a discipline designed to work with people who have problems, issues, or disorders, and coaching is used with people who are basically healthy, but who want to achieve more happiness or success in life. However, the psychology has been appropriated by the coaching industry, and is commonly referred to as positive psychology. The psychology of coach principles in the 21st century includes this discipline which once was only used for people with mental disorders or diseases.
