A Radiologist explains the patient CT scan procedure

Irving, TX – A CT scan is called computerized tomography. The machine takes images of the body, similar to X-ray. The CT scan provides more data than a conventional X-ray. Images are taken from different angles and compiled to make one picture that is highly informative to the radiologist.

"A CT scan can penetrate in body tissues and bone to give a comprehensive 3D picture. It is a recommended way of seeking immediate detection of cancer cells," a radiologist explains. "The CT scan technology uses less radiation than the regular X-ray."

How and Why a CT scan?
CT scans are always necessary when looking for more details in particular areas of the body. It produces high quality images that will allow your doctor to detect evidence of any cancer. It can also diagnose internal bleeding or injuries.

Your doctor will decide if a CT scan is necessary. During the CT scans, the radiologists often use contrast, which is in the form of a dye. The dye is not needed unless when shallow images of the scan are produced. The dye gives a spotlight to particular areas of the body.

The procedure
It’s always quick and painless. Patients remove their jewelry and metal objects before wearing a gown. The patient then lies on a small table in position to slide into the scanner. The ring of the scanner will start rotating around you, taking the needed images.

The CT scan machine has advanced technology that allows patients to communicate with the operator through an intercom. The procedure is often painless although it exposes you to radiation.

After the scan, the doctor will collect the pictures and study them. You will receive the results which will indicate the presence or absence of any disease.

“If your CT scan operator used the contrast dye, you are required to drink a lot of fluids to help you flushthe dye from your body,” the radiologist continues. "The scan is low-risk and will provide accurate results for effective diagnosis. Screening sessions are essential for detection of any cancer; they will help you avoid the risks of cancer and seek earlier treatment.”
