Understanding Positron Emission Mammography (PEM)

A Radiologist explains how positron emission mammography (PEM) works and its benefits.

Irving, TX – Positron emission mammography helps in detecting breast cancer. It works just like PET scanning but uses a high-resolution PET scanner that is mainly designed for detection of breast cancer. Detectors are mounted on compression paddles to image the breast.

“Positron emission mammography produces accurate images of small lesions in the breast and can help doctors pinpoint the exact tumor locations," explained the radiologist. "When used with other imaging modalities, it can help to minimize the need for breast biopsy. It can also assist doctors to detect and determine the size of ductal carcinoma in situ, which is very difficult to identify using conventional technologies."

Here are the benefits of positron emission mammography:

• Improves management of breast cancer – Positron emission mammography helps to detect breast cancer with definite diagnosis to allow doctors to plan the right treatment option for each patient.

• Two imaging modalities in one helps to identify tiny lesions – Positron emission mammography is highly innovative and can identify tiny breast tissue lesions through its special detectors.

• Helps in detecting early tumors, planning therapy, and monitoring – Positron emission mammography can detect 1.6 mm tumors, which can be successfully removed with surgery. All the suspicious lesions in the axilla and the breast can be identified in a single session of positron emission mammography.

• In case a biopsy is required to confirm a diagnosis, a device can be attached to the positron emission mammography system to perform the biopsy together with PEM. The modality can also reliably evaluate therapy response after two weeks compared to other modalities that take three months to do so. This spares patients from ineffective therapies. PEM is ideal for detecting relapses and following up on treatments.

Positron emission mammography has high sensitivity and specificity and offers superior precision at very high resolutions than other modalities.
