What about old School RuneScape? I have no idea. It's not difficult to recognize the games that are time-sink and how they eat up your life and then you complain about it online. But RuneScape is different. When I'm not gaming, I'm not able to formulate an opinion on it. I just listen to the music in my brain, and feel a gravitational attraction to the music. The discovery that it was an error on my mobile. My family hasn't called me in weeks.
RuneScape was one of the pioneers, a game solely focused on engagement, which doesn't necessarily have to coincide with enjoyment. It's not that these two games are mutually exclusive however, it's just that there are ways to play even in the absence of having amusement.
RuneScape is also one of the best in its field. I've been enjoying the fan documentary RuneScape Historical Timeline 1998 to 2020, which is about the development (it really has taken over every aspect that I've been involved in) and the developers were stunned to find players hitting their maximum statistics in months, instead of years.
The top tier accounts were available for more than 10 hours per day, every day. And coming back in 2021 I can see the reason. If you're a fan of the fantasy genre, then the atmospheric music can lull you to sleep. It's so simple that your mind will fill in the blanks. It's likely that's why we were hooked as kids, it's the perfect playground to have your own adventure.
