In the past, a lot of these gold miners were primarily located in China. Some hunkered down in makeshift factories, where they slaughtered virtual ogres, and looted their bodies in 12-hour shifts. There were news reports about the Chinese government using prisoners as gold farms.

In RuneScape, the black-market economy of gold farmers was quite small, at least until 2013. Some players were unsatisfied with the extent to which the game had changed since it was first released in 2001. The players subsequently asked Jagex to return to a prior version. Jagex made available a previous version of its archive, and subscribers went back to what later came to be known as Old School RuneScape.

A lot of these players were like Mobley. They played RuneScape when they were teenagers and looked back fondly on the striking graphics and kitschy soundtrack. Although the 20- and 30 year olds had plenty of time as children but they had to take on responsibilities in addition to homework.

"People are employed now, have families potentially," said Stefan Kempe, another popular producer of content for RuneScape who has over 200,000 subscribers and goes by the SoupRS. SoupRS, on an interview. "It's an impediment to how much they are able to play everyday."
