Tokachi Group - Facebook Looks To Asia For Messaging Model.

Tokachi Group: Messaging represents the ‘next frontier’ in Asia according to Facebook’s David Marcus.

Tokachi Group: Wildly popular and successful online messaging apps like China’s WeChat and Japan’s LINE have helped convince a senior Facebook executive that, as far as Asia is concerned, messaging is the next frontier.

David Marcus, the social media giant’s head of messaging products, says the potential for spinning off native services and third party products is just one of the reasons why Facebook’s own Messenger app will spearhead the company’s drive to change the face of mobile shopping.

“There’s little doubt that the online messaging space in Asia is absolutely phenomenal in terms of its scope and penetration,” said a Tokachi Group technology analyst.

“WeChat has a vast user base as does LINE which is incredibly popular in several Asian countries outside Japan.”

Facebook’s Messenger was spun off from the main Facebook mobile app last year because it would have proven more difficult for the company to develop and build more features for it if it was still part of the flagship application.

Tokachi Group says the Messenger app has already laid foundations for revenue generation including mobile payments and direct consumer-to-business messaging that would simplify the online shopping experience.

Facebook opened Messenger to third party developers back in March with a view to allowing them to develop products specifically for the app and its 700 million monthly active users.

“The Asian market’s shown what is possible with mobile messaging and there’s no reason why Facebook shouldn’t be able to recreate that kind of success elsewhere,” concluded the Tokachi Group analyst.
