Aging can limit a person’s physical and mental abilities. But this can further cause their physical and mental health to deteriorate. If you feel your senior loved one’s life has slumped into a daily rut, you can help them by introducing a variety of stimulating activities to improve their quality of life.

Art and Craft
Most seniors feel lonely as their mobility becomes limited and their social life gets affected. Let them freely express themselves with crafting options. They can paint, draw and sketch, knit, create jewelry, make pottery or engage in any craft that allows them to express their creativity. If they join a class or a club, crafting also helps them to connect with others in a group.

Gardening
Many seniors like any opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and gardening is a great option. Even if they lack the strength for advanced gardening, they can do easier tasks, such as watering and seed placement. Gardening also allows seniors to take in some critical Vitamin D that is possible only under the Sun and exercise a little which is important for their physical and mental health.

Walking
Some form of physical activity (according to their doctor’s recommendations) can help seniors get the endorphins flowing. You can take walks together around the neighborhood or in a park, or they can join an exercise group for seniors or swim. You may be able to find organized exercise classes for seniors, such as yoga or aerobics.

Reading
If the senior enjoys reading, ensure that books, magazines and other reading materials are available. Reading can be done individually or in a group. Would they like to discuss what they read in a book club setting? If they like to write, encourage them to write. It will keep their minds sharp and the creative juices flowing.

Baking
If your senior loved one is a foodie, allow them to be involved in meal planning, preparation, and/or baking. This may want to bake simple recipes like cookies or pancakes. Baking together can be a fun and stimulating activity for the entire family.

Pets
Animals have a special way of showing affection and bonding with seniors. If they love animals, let you senior loved one spend time with pets and other animals. Research shows that doing so can improve overall well-being.

Caring
Once in a while, treat your elderly loved one to some self-care at a salon, or spa. Let them enjoy a new haircut or color, skin treatments, massages and more.
