Honeywell Believes in the Future of Smart Manufacturing

Honeywell sounds bullish about the future of smart manufacturing and the industrial Internet of Things, or IIoT.

Speaking at an investor conference Thursday, CFO Gregory Lewis sounded upbeat about Honeywell’s (ticker: HON) software-centric strategy.

“We’ve had a fairly good first half of the year in terms of our performance so far: 7% organic growth, 50 basis points of margin expansion when you exclude the impact of the spins, double-digit software growth with our Connected Enterprise,” he said. Honeywell Connected Enterprise is the IoT initiative CEO Darius Adamczyk started last year, being led by Microsoft (MSFT) alum Que Dallara.

The back story. In recent years, Honeywell spun off chemical company AdvanSix (ASIX), home technology company Resideo Technologies (REZI), as well as turbo charger maker Garrett Motion (GTX). The company is now organized around what management refers to as “critical infrastructure.” That includes: commercial buildings (which range from airports to colleges to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa skyscraper), aerospace, energy, and logistics.

Honeywell’s strong start to the year is reflected in its stock price, which has outpaced its industrial peers so far in 2019. Honeywell shares are up about 29% year to date, better than the 15% change of the Dow Jones Industrial Average over the same span and the 22% gain of the Industrial Select Sector SPD ETF (XLI).

What’s new. Even though Honeywell stock is performing well, investors are worried about the economy, especially with the U.S. industrial sector contracting in August for the first time since early 2016. Lewis tried to assuage some of those concerns.

“I wouldn’t say there’s a real incremental [economic] shift that’s incredibly noticeable,” said Lewis. “I wouldn’t say in the last 6 or 8 weeks, we’ve seen a number big step down, if you will.”

Looking ahead. Fall conferences are a little like back-to-school season for investors. It’s a time between earnings reports when investors can ask management teams how things are going.
