The World's Greenest Coffee Pods

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In David Attenborough’s recent film ‘A Life On Our Planet’ (2020), he pleads with his audience to take whatever action you can to reduce our environmental impact on the planet.

Coffee is the second most traded commodity after crude oil (over 10 million tonnes per year), and growth in coffee sales shows no sign of letting up.

The convenience of coffee pods means that over 33% of UK households own a coffee pod espresso machine and that figure is increasing by 8.5% per annum.
Over 1 billion coffee pods consumed in the UK in 2019 - over 2.7 million pods per day and with so many employees working from home these figures have increased significantly during 2020. UK consumption is set to rise to 4 million pods per day by 2025.

However, our addiction to single-shot coffee pods is not good for the environment. Plastic and aluminium pods account for 95% of discarded pods and take up to 500 years to decompose in landfill sites. Some companies offer to recycle your used aluminium pods but there’s a huge carbon footprint created in collecting, processing, smelting, and reforming into new pods.

Other companies offering 'compostable & biodegradable capsules' are misleading. They will not decompose in your garden under normal composting conditions. These capsules have to be industrially composted but because waste management companies in the UK do not have the facility to sort and separate these items out, they are incinerated because the UK Government considers them to be a health hazard.
The solution turned out to be very simple – create a coffee pod that will naturally break down in your home compost or food waste bin (with a few weeks), and decomposing into a
fertilizer releasing nitrogen and other nutrients into the soil - a real treat for your plants and vegetables. There's no mess, no landfill, and no further carbon footprint so a win-win for the environment and the planet.

COFFEE PODS have created pods that are 100% home compostable using a by-product from the sugar cane industry call bagasse. Around 40 million tonnes of the bagasse fibres are produced each year so with each pod weighing in at 3 grammes, there’s plenty of the waste product to fulfil our needs without having to resort to aluminium or plastic, both of which require significant processing and refining from their base materials.
The adhesive is a permanent vegetable-based biodegradable and compostable.

All printing uses environmentally-friendly, vegetable-based ink.
To ensure that the coffee you brew is at its freshest, COFFEE PODS have designed a tray so that coffee drinkers can fill their own coffee pods as and when needed. It takes less than 3 minutes to create 10 filled pods.
Coffee drinkers are then free to use the very best, freshest coffee created by 450 local artisan coffee roasteries located throughout the country.

After purchasing a tray each customer receives full details of all UK artisan coffee roasteries, helping to support small local businesses.
