Mass Layoffs by Apple in California, US
In a recent event, Apple Inc. removed more than 600 employees in California in the United States. This move of the company seems to be linked with its decision to discontinue its car project and also the in-house efforts to make Apple Watch displays.

Both these projects of Apple were closed earlier this year in February. The decision to cancel the car project began from the executive decision related to the mounting cost concerns and its direction. 614 workers of Apple are included in this major job cut by Apple, they got the information about the dismissal later in the month of March and as per reports, they are expected to leave near the end of May.

Likewise, the programme of smartwatch display met with supplier challenges, and engineering hurdles, and was ultimately regarded as too expensive to continue with. The information is derived from the WARN notices, also known as worker adjustment and retraining notification filings submitted to Apple's California

Employment Development Department.
These filings become essential when a company is steering mass layoffs. Eight separate reports were filed by Apple to comply with the regulations, each of the reports has the information of the detailing layoffs at specific locations in California. Among the employees laid off, around 87 were working with a facility dedicated to the next-generation screen development of Apple, while the others were associated with the card project.
It is essential to pay attention to the fact that WARN notices might not consist of filling the scope of the job reductions. Likely there are engineers from Apple’s side working on these projects in other locations like Arizona. Generally, mass layoffs are not a common occurrence at Apple unlike other big firms or tech giants including Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, etc.

Impact on the Car and watch display units
It is obvious that the decision to mass layoffs did affect the unites of offices of watch displays and cars in California. The main car-related office of Apple located in Santa Clara in Califonia was affected ted with the decision of mass layoff as around 371 employees were laid off from there. Dozens of employees working in the satellite offices of Apple also lost their jobs in the brunt of layoffs by Apple.

However, it is reported that some of the members of the car team were relocated to other areas within Apple such as to the field of personal robotics and artificial intelligence. Reportedly, the job titles that are affected by this brunt of layoffs include hardware engineers, machine shop managers and product design engineers.
This is the first major layoff round Apple did after the pandemic era, usually, Apple is not linked with mass layoffs because of its strong tech presence.

Keys Facts of the Mass Layoffs by Apple
The news of permanently laying off 614 employees from 8 offices of Apple in Santa Clara was disclosed. Among the facilities mentioned in the filing where 59 workers were laid off, is linked with the address of microLED display tech maker LuxVue Technology which was acquired by Apple in 2024.

The company’s decision to cancel the plans to develop displays was reported, and the other firings were linked to the project of a self-driving electric car which was scrapped by the company last month.

Tim Cook, the CEO of the company in an interview with CNBC last year in May presented his view on large layoffs considering them as the last resort and he then mentioned that it is something the company is not talking about at the moment.
