A Conversation with Tim Entwisle: On Common Technical Writing Mistakes

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to take part in a digital business communication seminar with some of the leading industry experts from all over Australia.

We conversed with Tim Entwisle, who is the director of a specialist copywriting agency Madrigal Communications.

With over a decade of experience, Entwisle has extensive experience in communications, infrastructure and project management. He also specialises in tender writing for government organisations, corporate clients, small businesses and more.

In our exclusive conversation with Tim, we wanted to explore the common mistakes writers are prone to when drafting technical documents. He was kind enough to share his expertise.

“Technical writing can not be confused with creative writing. That’s something new writers are vulnerable to. They tend to unnecessarily make the document lengthy. Whether you’re writing a tender proposal or media release, it’s crucial to keep the content succinct and to the point.”, shares the expert.

He further continues, “I’ve also observed writers using complicated terms and industry jargon for the sake of impressing the audience. But this can have the opposite effect. Who wants to keep referring to a dictionary while reading a user manual or business proposal? It’s best to use simple language that can be easily comprehended.”

Lastly, the experts conclude, “No matter which document you’re drafting, it’s a good idea to start with an outline. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a hard-to-follow structure that will compromise the overall quality of the document.”
