The Growing Importance of Supply Chain in Latin America

The LatAm Supply Chain & Logistics Strategy Summit delves into aspects of supply chain and logistics across industry and its importance in the growing Latin American market.
 
Looking into the prospects of how supply chain and logistics can aid in the economic growth of industry in the Latin American region, the LatAm Supply Chain and Logistics Strategy Summit commenced yesterday, 28 April 2014 at the Hilton Sao Paulo Mourumbi, Brazil.

Delivering the first session of the day was Tales Ehlers, Inbound Director for Nike Brazil. Speaking on how supply chain infrastructure is supporting the business growth in Brazil, he also presented an overview of the current scenario in the region and the benchmarks that are being set for future development. Following his footsteps, Donald Hicks, Founder, President and CEO of Llamasoft Inc. presented a case study on how supply chain design technology is enabling a radical supply chain transformation. LLamasoft is a provider of supply chain software and expertise to design and improve network operations.

The conference attendees also heard from Jansen Esteves, Director of Global Supply Chain on how to build a competitive advantage with the special customs in Brazil and from Fabio Miranda of Melhoramentos CMPC Papeis on the S&OP process and implementation. The conference also saw expert panelists discussing on two panels. Where one panel delved into how modernization and efficient custom clearance can be the required boost for trade in the region the other looked into minimizing the gap between strategy, S&OP and execution.

The conference also featured speakers from leading trade associations from the region. Elcio Grassia who is the Chairman for Supply Chain Council, Latin American Chapter, addressed the audience on how to achieve optimal operations and business performance with supply chain integration. He spoke on the impact of the SCOR model and integrated performance metrics. Grassia was also the Chairman for the conference. The conference ended with an address by Paulo Resende on the role of public funding for the supply chain and logistics industry. Resende works with the Funding Authoirity for Studies and Projects (FINEP) under the Ministry of Science of Technology.

The final day of the LatAm Supply Chain commenced today and will address themes on 'Building Intelligent & Agile Supply Chain Systems' , 'Improving Supply Chain Efficiency' and 'Logistics as a driving force in Latin America'. The delegates will hear from Frank Migiyama, Director at Alvarez & Marsal Brasil on Forecasting and Gilberto Xavier from the Center of Research and Development of PETROBRAS on the technology features being used to improve the logistics operations in the company.

Keynote address will be from Fernando Cotrim, Supply Chain Director for Rio 2016 Organizing Committee for The Olympic and Paralympic Games on the challenges of building a sustainable supply chain for The Olympic and Paralympic Games and Rui Miuguel Cunha of Walmart on building an effective supplier relationship management. Case studies from Merck Group on Pharma Supply Chain Operations, GE O & G on developing a competitive supply chain for both domestic and international markets and Grupo M. CASSAB on strategy & operation for 2PL companies will also be addressed. Edson Carillo of the Brazilian Logistics Association (ABRALOG) will present on the best practices of running a warehouse distribution center successfully.

Chairing the conference today is Alexandre Oliveira, President of the Brazilian Institute of Supply Chain Professionals (I.B.S.). Oliveira will cover topics related with risk management in supply chain. He will also be discussing on panel with Mauricio Valadares (GE O&G), Cunha (Walmart) and Fabio Castello (Scania Latin Americas Ltd) discussing how to improve logistics performance and competitiveness in the Latin American region.
