Emerging Technologies for Safer and Smarter Roads in Middle East

Future global strategies for road safety across the world and in GCC Region to be discussed at the Middle East Road Safety & ITS Summit.
 
Road Safety has been a concern globally and the Sultanate of Oman is undergoing a series of upgrades in its transport network in a bid to improve traffic flow and boost safety. With approx RO 2.1 billion pumped into 67 large road projects, Oman is adopting Smarter Road Technologies. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has approved new road constructions and expansion of the existing road network as part of an overall infrastructure development program.

The Middle East Road Safety & ITS Summit, held under the Patronage of Ministry of Transport & Communications Muscat, Sultanate of Oman and supported by ITS Arab will take place on 6 - 7 May 2014 at Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Muscat, Oman. Spanning over two days, the summit on road safety & ITS will create a platform for authorities, government organizations and stakeholders to participate in intense discussions on project updates and recommendations on the best strategies moving forward.

Delivering the keynote presentation at the summit, Dr. Abdulgader Othman Amir, Vice Mayor - Strategic Planning & Chief Planner from Jeddah Municipality, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will also present a case study on Mayasem Project - ”Shared space concept as a different approach to road and pedestrian safety, towards building complete streets”. With Royal Oman Police taking new intitatives the amount of road accidents have currently declined by 20% in the region. A case study on 'The Road Safety Research Program by The Research Council Oman', will be expanded by Dr. Abdullah Ali Nasser Al-Maniri from The Research Council, Oman.

Attendees will get an opportunity to interact with Dr. Tom Voge who is the Road and Traffic Safety Expert at United Nations, UN-DESA KSA. He will address the attendees on 'National ITS and Road Safety Programs - From Technology Transfer to Innovation.' and also lead a panel discussion about International cooperation on ITS for road safety at GCC Level. First hand experience on planning for smarter, more efficient and safer roads across the Middle Eastern countries will also be shared and reviewed at the summit.
