Shoulder pain is a growing condition affecting most people. Many people may experience some pressure at some point on their neck. The causes of the pain and the severity of the symptoms may vary from person to person. The restoration and return to normal function also vary for several reasons from person to person. But, how do you know what causes your shoulder pain? This article addresses several common strategies for the treatment of different pain generators on the shoulder from an experienced physical therapist's perspective.

The rotating cuff muscles and tendons, the bursa and the capsule are three common pain generators on the shoulder. The rotating cuff muscles and tendons are built to rotate our shoulder (and thus their name) and to lift our arms above our head. The bursa or bursal sac is intended to protect the muscles against scraping on the bone edge. The bursa therefore sits between the muscle and the bone, functioning like a coil. Without it the rotating cuffs will scrape on the edge of the bone again and again and become irritated. The shoulder capsule gives the shoulder joint more stability. Any of these structures may be an inflammatory or injured pain generator. Sometimes in combination with each other, they are inflamed.
