Today, PepsiCo is considered to be one of the world's biggest beverage and food companies. It has a wide variety of brands , selling them in more than 200 countries all over the world. Pepsi is known as the company that pays significant attention to the question of ethics, however, the reality proves the opposite in many ways. The situation in India clearly demonstrates that PepsiCo is more interested in making profits rather than in the safety and well-being of its customers.
In fact, PepsiCo entered the market of India in 1989, and since that time it has become one of the biggest F&B companies in the country. At the same time, unfortunately, India has become the home of major ethical wrongdoings. Pepsi was strongly criticized for the poor quality and safety of its drinks. According to the data obtained by the Center for Science in 2003, the water used by PepsiCo contained a large amount of toxins and pesticides, which greatly contributed to the general breakdown of the immune system and development of cancer. Soft drinks produced by PepsiCo had nearly 36 times more pesticides than it is allowed by European Union Regulations. Even though there is no particular law in India that forbids such level of pesticides, PepsiCo can still face significant repercussions for its unethical activities. Nowadays, the Indian government is still trying to find a way to validly detect the level of pesticides and ban any trace of them in soft drinks produced by PepsiCo and its main competitor Coca Cola. The state of Kerala even temporarily banned the sale of PepsiCo's beverages and foods. Five other Indian states also introduced partial bans in order to handle the problem. Through such extreme actions, the local government wanted to demonstrate that huge multinational companies should act ethically and responsibly towards people, regardless of the national law.
Another serious problem was the pollution of Indian agricultural lands by PepsiCo's manufacturing plants. According to the study done in 1992, PepsiCo and Coca Cola together were responsible for creating nearly 10,000 metric tons of plastic through their importing and manufacturing operations. Similar cases happened once again in 2006 in relation to both farmers and government officials . Actually, nearly 60-70% of that plastic was recyclable, creating a huge amount of unnecessary plastic waste . In addition, Indian farmers stated that the plant of PepsiCo used the groundwater to conduct its own operations, making it more difficult to effectively grow crops. Products sold by the company in India have also caused numerous health-related problems. Even though today the company is becoming more health and nature oriented, offering low-fat and low-calorie natural products, its unethical past still spoils its reputation.
The actions, behavior, and attitude of PepsiCo have a damaging effect on the Indian economy in many ways, as this company is one of the largest in the country. Due to the fact that PepsiCo's beverages negatively impact the health of people, causing cancer or other complicated diseases, the country is obliged to allocate significant amounts of money to health care in order to treat sick individuals. These financial resources could be used otherwise if the problem with PepsiCo did not exist. Moreover, due to the fact that more people have health problems, it is necessary to build new hospitals that also require substantial sums of money. As a rule, this money is taken out of the pockets of Indian taxpayers. Individuals who have health problems are also temporarily or permanently unable to work, which means that they will not pay taxes. In other words, if many people are unhealthy, it adversely impacts the economic engine of the country, significantly slowing it down. Furthermore, people could invest money and time in business or education instead of spending them on the treatment of certain diseases. When people become sick, they lose their potential, new innovations are not created, and companies do not develop. Finally, the negative impact of PepsiCo on agriculture also considerably contributes to economic problems, especially those related to financial and economic challenges faced by Indian farmers, the scarcity of good agricultural land, and demographic situation in the country. The above-mentioned factors significantly harm the Indian economy and consequently all citizens. In addition, it is critical to remember about the effect of synergy, meaning that all these problems altogether have a much greater impact on the economy of India than each of them separately.
To conclude, it is important to state that today multinational corporations in general and PepsiCo in particular become more customer-oriented and ethical in terms of products they sell and approaches they use. Of course, customers should not have any illusions about the reasons for such positive changes, as the only real goal of PepsiCo is to make profits. The example of PepsiCo demonstrated that the government, local authorities, and ordinary people should constantly control such companies in order to keep the economy stable and avoid possible health-related problems. In other words, learning the lessons of the past can help to achieve the prosperous future not only with PepsiCo but also with other companies.
