Understanding Lung Cancer

Dr. Neeraja Dasari explains the possible symptoms, testing and treatment of lung cancer.

Lewisville, TX- Lung cancer is a terrifying diagnosis because of many reasons. Fortunately, however, early diagnosis and treatment can make all the difference.

“It is essential to point out any risk factors for developing lung cancer so that screenings can take place regularly,” says Dr. Dasari. “The common one is a history of smoking. There are various choices of treating lung cancer based on the level of disuse and other physical conditions of the patient.”

Here are some of the recommended criteria for dealing with lung cancer.

• Symptoms: The early stages of lung cancer may not produce any symptoms. However, as cancer grows, it begins to create a diversity of symptoms, including chest pain, a recurrent cough, or a cough with blood, difficulty in breathing, often lung infections, loss of weight, and a feeling of fatigue.

• Testing: The availability of these symptoms does not, however, mean that one has lung cancer. It is, nevertheless, essential to see a doctor if one is experiencing any of these conditions. The doctor will go over the risk factors, discuss the symptoms, and give a full examination to the patient.

• Treatment: Treatment will be tailored appropriately depending on the diagnosis done, and may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of several medications.

“If lung cancer cells are present, the doctor will examine them to determine if they are non-small cell or small cell lung cancer,” continues Dr. Dasari. “Non-small cell lung cancer is the highest percentage of diagnosed lung cancer and slowly grows and spreads. Small cell lung cancer is in the least of diagnosed lung cancer, and it spreads fast.”
