It’s hard not to do a double-take when first laying eyes on the unicycle. After all, X8 is a single-wheeled electric scooter that uses an electric motor, accelerometers, gyros and a microcontroller to give riders a smooth, self-balancing ride.

If the sight of a metal frame, wooden deck and a chunky grooved wheel fails to convey a sense of great build quality, stepping feet on the deck drives home. When it comes to speed, the scooter can go as fast as 20 kilometers per hour, but its acceleration is software-limited to allow for better self-balancing (the speed limit is 12 km/h).

As for range, X8 intelligent single-wheeled electric scooter can go from 18 kilometers to 23 kilometers on a single charge thanks to a lithium battery, and it can be juiced up in two hours. Unfortunately, the device only has about 50 minutes worth of ride time in its battery, through those changes with terrain and personal driving style.

Riding the board for the first time feels a lot like learning how to use a bicycle. The first few tries weren’t much more than attempting to maintain balance while stationary, but I managed to stay planted and mobile much longer with each try. It might sound strange to have trouble keeping your balance on a self-balancing electric scooter. Tilt forward or backward ever so slightly to start moving in one direction, and lean even further to pick up speed. Turning is also a matter of throwing a bit of weight in the direction you wish to go. The hefty tire gives the board a smooth ride—even making for a fluid cruise on a cracked and uneven asphalt.

Such a self-balancing electric scooter is so stylish to be ridden on the road. Since it’s special to roll on just one wheel, it can be a hit or spotlight on the street when you ride it freely to go across different terrains. The birth of X8 is a blessing for all lovers of one wheel.
