In chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) the bone marrow carries out uncontrolled production of white blood cells or granulocytes so much that it gradually crowd the bone marrow, interfering with normal blood cell production. In most of the chronic cases these cells also spill out of the bone marrow and circulate around the body in the bloodstream. Due to improper growth of white blood cells, they are unable to function properly to fight infections leading to a shortage of red blood cells and platelets leading to anemia, bleeding and/or bruising.
