Mumbai now hosts the world’s tallest rehabilitation towers, with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) constructing a 42-storey project at the iconic Dhobi Ghat in Mahalaxmi.
Around 1000 families have received keys to new homes and access to 19 retail units in of the towers at Saibaba Nagar. This will eventually house around 5,000 residents from societies next to the Dhobi Ghat.
Spread over 12 acres near the heritage washers’ site, it will rehabilitate around 16,000 people in phases, benefitting dhobis and allied workers.
It boasts state-of-art construction, welfare centers, society offices, balwadis and 16 elevators by German firm Schindler, unlike regular SRA buildings.
The project has been jointly developed by Omkar and Piramal realty.
