The latest State of Safety Report for 2023, shows that those living in Rhode Island are more worried about their safety than the rest of the country. The State does offer some of the lowest crime rates with the safest cities having crime rates below the national average for violent crime and property crime.

In 2022, the crime rate increased, this year the violent crime rate in Rhode Island has dropped to 2 incidents per one thousand people, compared to the 2.3 incidents last year. Property crime has seen an increase this year but remains at around 12.5 incidents per one thousand residents. The New England area has the second-highest violent crime rate and the third-highest property crime rate.

The overall crime rates in the state remain lower than the national average. Forty-one states met the reporting requirements this year, Rhode Island is ranked as the fifth lowest for violent crime and the sixth lowest for property crime. The violent crime rate in Rhode Island is thirteen percent lower than last year's survey and remains one of the lowest in the United States.

Forty-two percent of those that took part in the survey in Rhode Island believe that the state is safe to live in. Last year fifty percent felt it was safe, that is a twenty-two percent point difference. Murders, robberies, and assaults remain low, but rapes make up twenty-one percent of violent crime when compared to the eleven percent average nationwide.
