DUI lawyer Rhode Island experiences a rise in cases in 2024.

Rhode Island state police achieved approximately one thousand DUI arrests in 2023. This is the highest impaired driving arrests seen in the state over the past few years. This is a new record with the closest being in 2021, when nine hundred and fifty four DUI arrests were made. These new cases, which are surging, have drawn some attention to certain cases.

One Friday night in November 2023, more that nine people were arrested and charged with DUI charges, this included a young women that crashed her car into another car with two young children in the back seat.

Since 2015, the trend for DUI arrests in Rhode Island has been on a steady rise. The annual arrests have risen exponentially, resulting in a specialized traffic safety unit being formed From 2015 to 2019, state troopers averaged approximately four hundred and fifty seven arrests each year, this rose to more than six hundred in 2020 with 2021 achieving a record high of nine hundred and fifty four. This number dropped in 2022 to just shy of eight hundred arrests.

2023 was another year of a high volume of arrests with more than one thousands arrests in total being recorded. The new unit has increased the number of arrests, but also shows that people are willing to take the risk and drive under the influence throughout the state. With ride-hailing options available today, it's a surprise that those that have been drinking are not taking advantage of the tools at their disposal in this day and age.

John Grasso said “There is a problem with impaired drivers in the state and this comes with serious consequences, including penalties, license suspensions and even jail time. On average law enforcement agencies in the state arrest close to three thousand people each year, of which seventy percent refuse to submit a chemical test. Those that do provide the test are more than twice above the legal limit.”

Rhode Island is currently above the national average for DUI cases. John Grasso does recommend anyone arrested on a DUI charge secure the services of an experienced lawyer as quickly as possible to handle their case for them.
