Although you’ve probably heard of it, you may not have a real idea of how domestic violence is a serious problem that affects millions of people worldwide, every year. In Florida, according to the NCADV, one-third of women and men get to be victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives, either by family members or a partner.

Domestic violence is a serious issue that has been around since the beginning of time, and what makes it such a profound problem is that a lot of people will not accuse the offender, as these are problems typically occurring behind private doors, and victims many times do not realize that they are in fact, victims.

For these reasons, we’ll define what exactly domestic violence is, its legal consequences, and why is it such an important matter to create awareness about.

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in a relationship used by one person to gain power or control over the other. It can occur in any type of relationship regardless of gender, age, and the role of the people involved (fathers, sons, unmarried or married couples, etc.). Domestic violence can involve any type of coercion, from physical or emotional abuse to even economic manipulation.

What can victims of domestic violence do?

In the United States, domestic violence is a serious problem. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, more than 12 million people are victims of domestic violence every year. In Florida, domestic violence is a criminal offense, and there are laws in order to protect the victims and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Victims of domestic violence can obtain a restraining order, known as an injunction for protection, to legally prohibit their abuser from contacting them or even coming near them. Violating a said restraining order can have serious legal consequences. There are other measures victims can take that will depend on each specific case, and there are many available resources for victims of domestic violence, including shelters, support groups, and hotlines.

It’s very important to create awareness about the fact that no person deserves to be abused. Domestic violence cannot and should not be justified, and still, many people choose to not pursue their legal rights because they either believe that it will be worse, as they will anger the abuser, or they believe they deserve to be abused. Whatever the cause, legal assistance is necessary.
