Say 'I do' to "My Big Fat Portuguese Wedding' coming to White's of Westport

The Portuguese Kids are holding a wedding, and the public is invited to join in the hilarity as the comedy troupe unveils its new show locally.

Appropriately planned at White's of Westport, a wedding locale for generations of Greater Fall Riverites, "My Big Fat Portuguese Wedding," is set up like a real wedding, right down to the couple going from table to table interacting with the guests. "It's definitely something different from what we've done in the past," said Derrick DeMelo of the Portuguese Kids.

Years ago, the Portuguese-based comedy act did a Portuguese wedding, but this show is all-new and expanded. Their "guests" will enjoy a meal and dance and sing along with the young Portuguese couple as they take their vows.

But of course, there'll be some hearty laughs along the way, thanks to a cheapskate father of the bride, an overbearing mother of the groom, and a few other loud and pushy friends and relatives.

"My Big Fat Portuguese Wedding" features the Portuguese Kids (DeMelo, Al Sardinha, Jason Casmiro and Brian Martins) and a rotating cast of 11 or so performers. The comedy troupe developed the wedding last year and they brought it on the road to Canada, where they played to sold-out crowds for a couple weeks, said DeMelo.

Another show they're staging lately, "I'm Not Yelling, I'm Portuguese," sold out for a venue in Fall River. "It makes us feel good to know that we can sell out at home. I think we keep it fresh enough for fans to come back year after year," DeMelo said.

Originally, it was based on their parents, but over the years, DeMelo said they draw from things they see every day. And every day, their fans around the world email them with ideas based on their experiences for the Portuguese Kids to incorporate into their act, he added.

As always, the group of friends, who met when they were kids growing up in the Flint neighborhood, are busy traveling to various parts of the world to bring their comedy to the stage. In February, they're traveling to Australia for a tour and in July, they're hosting a four-day tour of the Azores in conjunction with Sagres Vacations. "We're very much a touring band," DeMelo added.
