Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, a Fairfax Lutheran Church, is commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 when Pope Francis participated in the Commemorative Worship along with Lutheran and other ecumenical leaders in Lund, Sweden. Pope Francis told worshippers that "we have a new opportunity to accept a common path, one that has taken shape over the past 50 years in the ecumenical dialogue between The Lutheran World Federation and the Catholic Church."

They will commemorate the 502nd Anniversary of the Reformation with a growing awareness that God's grace touches all of us in Christ. Christ Lutheran will worship with trumpet and pipe organ flair, backed by our vocal choir, on Sunday, October 27, at 10 a.m. You are invited!

Christ Lutheran continues the deep Lutheran tradition of using fine music in worship. Luther loved music: "Music is one of the greatest gifts that God has given us: it is divine. For with its aid many dire temptations are overcome; the devil does not stay where music is."

We will use prayers and petitions taken from the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification which Lutherans and Catholics agreed upon in 1999, twenty years ago. "Our churches face similar challenges in communicating the meaning of justification to today's society in ways which meet the experiences and needs of the world. We are gripped with the imperative of proclaiming the good news of salvation, through compassion and working for justice." (Notre Dame Consultation Statement, 2019)
